We carry out internal & external plastering in private & commercial properties across the north east. Our main source is domestic work / working in people’s homes. I was brought into plastering 10 years ago through family who had a plastering / general building service business working in people’s homes. I acquired many construction skills, joinery, plastering, bricklaying etc but chose to specialise and gain qualifications in plastering. As well as being qualified in our trade we are fully insured, this covers us for any accidental damage caused in the work place.

There are two main categories of plastering work: solid plastering and fibrous plastering.

Solid plastering means applying plaster finishes to creative a various finishes to surfaces such as walls, floors, and drives. Fibrous plastering is the name given to ornamental plastering. Examples include creating ornamental columns or ceiling roses, often using moulds and design workshops.

If you only need to apply a small amount of plaster to an area, like a cupboard under the stairs you might be tempted to do this yourself. However, more complex tasks are normally beyond most home owner’s level of expertise. Plasterings is a highly skilful trade so unless you are confident, and have some prior plastering experience, it is probably best to leave plastering jobs up to the professionals. This will save yourself a lot of time and potentially money.

Surveys on private properties are free, the survey can be specific (to one area that is reported by the client or holistic to walls and timbers (detailed survey investigating all walls & timbers in the property for defects) Damp surveys can check for rising damp, penetrating damp and wet rot in timbers.

Damp is caused through the lack of an effective damp-proof course. Damp in a property can ruin plaster work – wood work, stain furniture, purpose / stop the rental – sale of property and general become a smelly and unsightly nuisance among many other problems.

Rising Damp & Wet/Dry Rot in Timbers

Rising dampness is the most common form of damp found in property, this is identified by moisture readings obtained around the base of the walls using a damp-meter. In cases of prolonged dampness, visible dark, damp patches will appear along with hygroscopic salts on the surface of the wall, this can blow wall paper off the wall, blister paint & plaster off the wall and will tend to have a foist smell.

Treatment involves removing the plaster in the affected area to 1 metre high from the floor, spraying the masonry brickwork with a anti-sulphate solution. Then installing a chemical damp proof course using a specialised damp proofing cream, This is installed by drilling the appropriate mortar course at the base of the wall above the original DPC course if present and injecting the cream into the masonry substrate. This system used in conjunction with our specialist waterproof rendering system, this provides a reliable, and highly effective treatment for rising dampness with a guarantee up to 30 years.

Re-plastering of the walls following the damp proof course installation is essential. The installed damp proof course prevents moisture continuing to rise into the walls. The capillary action of damp rising is blocked by the chemical the DPC cream that is injected.

Dry rot / wet rot usually occurs when timbers are in contact with damp situations, and can coincide with rising damp in walls as joists/ timbers are in direct contact with masonry work..Conditions for rot to spread are at its highest where high humidity is apparent.

Successful treatment of Dry rot involves a number of key factors.

  • Remove the moisture source
  • Establishing a dry environment
  • Eradication fungal growth
  • Replace defective timbers
Dry rot (Serpula lacrymans) normally requires cutting out and disposing of defective timbers and chemical treatment to adjacent areas to eradicate fungal growth. Where masonry is affected, irrigation to the walls may be required, drilling the masonry and injecting a fungicidal preservative. Adjacent areas are also sterilised with a fungicide to eradicate any fungal spores which may remain and re-effect the treated area.

Wet rot treatment is usually less expensive to eradicate than Dry rot, the reason for this is the process does not normally require chemical treatment. Eradication of moisture sources, promoting a dry environment and timber replacement will still be required however. Installing additional air bricks and ensuring good under floor ventilation and circulation is vital to keeping wet rot at bay.
